Armstrong, BC – The City of Armstrong proudly announces its receipt of the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) Environmental Sustainability Award, presented at the SILGA conference on May 3, 2024. This recognition underscores Armstrong’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
The City’s Council Strategic Plan places Environmental Stewardship as one of their strategic priorities, guiding projects and policies aimed at preserving and enhancing the local environment.
Key among the initiatives recognized is the Meighan Creek Diversion project, a vital part of ongoing flood mitigation efforts. By constructing a stormwater bypass and implementing new culvert sections, Armstrong has bolstered its resilience against annual flooding and extreme rain events, safeguarding both property and community members.
Armstrong’s proactive approach to water conservation is exemplified by the revision of the Water Use and Conservation Bylaw. Through increased incentives for water conservation year-round, residential customers are encouraged to play an active role in mitigating climate change impacts. This dedication has earned Armstrong the Make Water Work Community Championship for the last six consecutive years.
Furthermore, the construction of City Hall has exceeded environmental standards, through the integration of sustainable materials, energy-efficient heating, and lighting systems, and landscape design. The landscape design, inspired by Make Water Work practices, will further reduces water usage, and promote habitat for pollinators, and ensures resilience to future climate change.
In a move towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, The City of Armstrong has transitioned its fleet to electric-powered equipment. This includes innovative vehicles such as the fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning and a Zero Turn Electric Ride-on Mower, aligning with the city’s vision of a cleaner, greener future.
“Receiving the SILGA Environmental Sustainability Award is a testament to Armstrong’s dedication to environmental stewardship. This recognition highlights our community’s efforts to protect our natural resources and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
– Mayor Joe Cramer
