Special Events in Armstrong
Armstrong embraces numerous non-profit and private special events throughout the year. These events serve as opportunities to enrich and celebrate our cultural identity, community spirit, pride, and unique sense of place. Recognizing their significant contribution to economic development, the City acknowledges that many of these events draw tourists and residents to the downtown core, thereby supporting local businesses.
The City has an obligation to ensure that all events are safe, structured and serve the needs of the residents, visitors, and businesses with a balanced approach. Special Event Applications are required from organizations and individuals wishing to hold special events on City-owned locations or on City streets or sidewalks and require approval prior to hosting an event. These applications must be submitted and approved prior to the event.
Events with large attendance, alcohol service, or known associated risks necessitate policing support and may require Council approval.
Applicants for special events are required to submit the following:
- The application completed in full, including all necessary documentation, at least 90 calendar days before the planned event.
- Written notification to all stakeholders.
- Event mapping or site layout.
- Emergency response plan, including provisions for first aid coverage.
- Special Occasions license/permit, if applicable.
- Noise bylaw exemption, if applicable.
- Traffic Safety Management Plan, Waste and Recycling Management Plan, and, and in some circumstances, arrangements for accessible washrooms.
- Proof of Insurance certificate indemnifying the City against any lawsuits, damages, losses, costs, or expenses.
- Payment of all deposits, fees, and additional costs associated with special events requiring extra City resources or policing support.
Staff may request event authorization from Council based on the following criteria:
- Security and or policing additional policing support requirements may exist.
- There is an increased liability and risk due to the size and or nature of the event.
- Additional fees and charges may be required; or
- Significant impacts to stakeholders have been identified.

Arenas, Halls and Auditoriums
The City of Armstrong offers a variety of multi-purpose facilities for sports, recreation, and community events. The Nor-Val Sports Centre provides a full-length ice surface, seating for 400 spectators, and hosts hockey, figure skating, and lacrosse leagues. Hassen Memorial Arena serves as a hub for lacrosse, roller skating, trade shows, and fitness activities, while Centennial Hall & Auditorium offers banquet space, a 160-seat theatre, and event facilities. In the winter, Hassen Arena welcomes public skating and organized hockey, while April to July brings the excitement of lacrosse leagues.

Hassen Memorial Arena
Hassen Memorial Arena is a versatile multi-use facility that hosts a wide range of activities, including lacrosse, roller skating, indoor trade shows, and community events. The Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce holds its annual trade show here, and the venue also attracts equine events, farmers markets, and more.
The facility features a fully equipped fitness centre, including a weight room, cardio area, and stretching space, to support your health and wellness goals.

Sunbelt Sports Centre
Built in 2004, the Sunbelt Sports Centre is a modern timber-frame arena that replaced the ice surface at Hassen Arena. This facility features a full-length ice surface, stadium seating for 400 spectators, and six dressing rooms. It serves as a hub for minor hockey and figure skating programs, welcoming participants of all skill levels.
During the summer season (April to July), the arena operates without ice and becomes home to minor, senior, and master lacrosse leagues. The facility also includes a concession, a boardroom, and houses the Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation Office.

A non profit society which provides curling for all ages, this active group operates from October to March with leagues and instruction for ladies, men, mixed, junior and senior members. Armstrong Curling Club – offers 3 sheets, licensed lounge, and always looking for new members.

Arenas, Halls and Auditoriums
If you enjoy ice skating during the winter months , this is the place to be. Active minor hockey and figure skating organizations provide programs for boys and girls at all levels. Several recreational old-timers hockey teams call Hassen Arena home. For those not interested in organized sports, weekly times are set aside for skating for all ages from Parents and Tots when you can either bring your baby in a stroller or on a sled, to Adults Only who glide gracefully to the Skater’s Waltz.

The world renowned Funtastic Mixed Slowpitch Tournament has an Armstrong Division and is held annually on the July 1st long weekend, and attracts teams from most parts of the province and Alberta.

The Asparagus Theatre group stages community productions, while the world-renowned Caravan Farm Theatre presents outdoor performances, workshops, and sleigh rides.

This community hall seats 200 persons for banquets and has an adjoining theatre with stage and fixed, raised seating for 141 persons. This facility can be utilized for small seminars and conferences requiring seating space and adjoining dining/dancing facilities. The local amateur Asparagus Theatre, hosts several theatrical productions each year for the enjoyment of the public. The main hall is equipped with banquet facilities and utilized for wedding receptions, banquet/dance functions, fitness classes, etc.

Fairgrounds and Barns
The Armstrong Fairgrounds, located within walking distance of downtown, the pool, park, and playground, is a vibrant center of activity from April to October. It provides excellent facilities for horse and livestock shows, featuring two indoor showrings, two outdoor showrings, and 210 box stalls for stabling horses, along with indoor stabling for cattle, swine, and goats. The grandstand seating accommodates 3,000 spectators, and the fairgrounds are equipped with public washrooms, shower facilities, and camping areas with water and power.
One of the main highlights of the fairgrounds is the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE), held annually in late summer. The IPE is a longstanding tradition that celebrates the agricultural roots of Armstrong with a blend of livestock shows, horsemanship competitions, rodeo events, and a wide variety of family-friendly activities. The fair attracts thousands of visitors each year, with entertainment, exhibits, and live music that highlight local talent and regional culture.
Outside of the IPE, the fairgrounds are home to the local Farmers’ Market, offering a wide array of seasonal fruits, vegetables, crafts, home-baked goods, and live entertainment. The grounds also host a variety of animal displays, including opportunities to pet miniature horses, llamas, alpacas, and rabbits, as well as enjoy dog agility trials, flyball events, and horse shows of every breed imaginable.
